A domestic interlude: Lord Northcliffe asserts himself

I regard my position as that of a public trustee, with immense responsibilities.

Northcliffe to J. Compton-Rickett

So far as I am concerned the ‘Observer’ is nothing. It is everything to Garvin…. Under no circumstances will I continue in the ‘Observer’ with him. I am extremely fond of him, but I think he acted with great unwisdom.

Northcliffe to Max Aitken

Buckle wrote to me about the ‘independence’ of ‘The Times’. I have learned a great deal of the ‘independence’ of ‘The Times’ during the last three years, and I know something of its ‘independence’ since the Jameson Raid, and I am ready for that sort of nonsense if required. Would indeed that ‘The Times’ were independent. It has about as much independence on certain matters as the hall porter at the Foreign Office or a Bond Street picture dealer’s assistant.

Northcliffe to Reginald Nicholson
